Music brings people together across the globe. First, a violin concerto written by Johannes Brahms – a Hamburg native who made Vienna his home – whilst on a summer holiday at Lake Wörthersee; the finale even takes a detour into the Puszta. Then a symphony with which the Czech master Antonín Dvořák achieved in the USA what is known as a major success: an orchestral work of the highest calibre, dearly loved by audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. The Largo, with its elegiac English horn solo, ranks among the most moving slow symphonic movements in the Romantic repertoire. Accompanied by a British orchestra and the Herbstgold artistic director, the Lithuanian-born Austrian Julian Rachlin, in the dual role of soloist and conductor: this is how the wider world comes together in Eisenstadt.
