Chamber Orchestra of Europe
Trevor Pinnock, one of the most prominent figures in the British period instrument movement and a renowned Haydn specialist, takes to the podium to conduct the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at the opening concert: together with the acclaimed young South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho, they demonstrate how Ludwig van Beethoven boldly defied fate in his melodious Piano Concerto in G major. Crucial to the development of Beethoven’s unique inventiveness was, of course, the music of his former teacher Joseph Haydn, represented here by his magnificent, witty and invigorating symphony featuring the timpani roll. Added to this are two wonderfully evocative musical depictions of nature: the play of the waves in Mendelssohn’s fairy-tale overture ‘The Fair Melusine’ and Jean Sibelius’s late-Romantic, ethereal ‘Scene with Cranes’.
