Virtuosic, surprising, entertaining: the brilliant Yuja Wang and the renowned Mahler Chamber Orchestra present the forces of piano, chamber ensemble and orchestra to this programme from unexpected, fascinating quarters - such as Leoš Janáček's mercurial Capriccio, written in 1926 for a war-disabled, one-armed pianist - a work full of poetry, mystery, natural sound as well as humour. Igor Stravinsky conceived his unusually angular Wind Octet in 1923 as something completely different, namely 'dry, cool, clear and sparkling like champagne' - this idea came to him in a dream. Conversely, Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto was written in 1957 for the 19th birthday of his son Maxim. Brilliant passages, rhythmic superpositions, pentatonic turns and, in the finale, the irregular drive of 7/8 time sweep the listener away - just like Yuja Wang, considered to be one of the most brilliant pianists of our time, whose colleagues in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, founded by Claudio Abbado, are adept in every musical style.
