Julian Rachlin, violin
Sir András Schiff, piano
Another musical summit at Herbstgold: When Julian Rachlin and Sir András Schiff think together about three popular works of classical-romantic literature for their two instruments, then new facets and surprising results can be expected. In the case of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's B major Sonata KV 378, for example, a contemporary critic noted that "the violin's accompaniment was so artificially linked to the piano part" that it would "require an equally skilled violinist as a piano player." Like Mozart, Franz Schubert was also an accomplished violinist: in his A major Sonata D 574, the 20-year-old confidently faced comparisons with his great role models. Of course, Ludwig van Beethoven was one of them, even if his epochal “Kreutzer Sonata” had not yet been composed at the time of this Schubert work: Beethoven, who was not a violinist by training, challenged the virtuosos of his time with this work, which was full of difficulties Extremes - in favor of simmering passions that were previously unknown in this genre.
