A magnificent program in solo-symphonic harmony of opposites: two piano concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, two serenades by Antonín Dvořák - and yet both pairs of works could hardly be more different. Mozart's A major concerto KV 488 is one of his most intimate, balanced pieces of the genre, chamber music simplicity, grace and nobility reign. The Concerto KV 503, on the other hand, surprises behind its magnificent C major façade, underpinned by timpani and trumpets, with an abundance of richly shaded themes: the piano enters into a free play of forces in constantly changing, always charming dialogues with strings, woods and brass. The two Dvořák serenades are also complementary, one only for strings, the other (almost) only exclusively for wind instruments. Of course, Sir András Schiff and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe also form a splendid combination: an autumn gold prelude entirely in the spirit of exhilarating, communal music-making
