Bamberg Symphony Orchestra

The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra is a marvellous exception: the historical roots of this unique ensemble – which has borne the suffix ‘Bavarian State Philharmonic’ since 2003 – lie, among other places, in Prague, from where German-speaking musicians were expelled after the Second World War. In their new home, they reunited and fused Bohemian and German musical traditions. A programme featuring music by Robert Schumann, amongst others, has long formed part of the Bamberg orchestra’s core repertoire; for HERBSTGOLD, it has been specially prepared in collaboration with Julian Rachlin, who takes on the dual role of soloist and conductor. In Schumann’s gripping, magnificent Fourth Symphony, the light and optimism of the world ultimately triumph over brooding solitude.
