Last year it wasn't meant to be, but now, finally, the Viano Quartet comes to Eisenstadt. 'Viano'? The members of the young Canadian-American ensemble explain that the names of all instruments of a string quartet begin with the letter 'v'. And, just like a piano, which plays both melody and harmony, their aim is to merge into a single body of sound, into a common instrument: a metamorphosis in itself. This philosophy earned the quartet, founded in Los Angeles in 2015, first prize in the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition. At HERBSTGOLD they show how Dvořák, in his final, most personal quartet, goes beyond his American experiences, how Bartók, in his dance-like 5th Quartet, incorporates Bulgarian melodies and rhythms into an arch form structure, and how words that come from nature, such as 'moss', 'stalk', 'water' and 'roots, inspired the young Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw.
